It's been a very beneficial morning spent at MOE. The Scholarship Tea Session tenable for PRC provided lots of insight into overseas undergraduate studies, not just in prestigious China Universities. The most interesting thing shared was that by studying there for 4 years, our senior saved up enough to become a mini millionaire as the cheapest meal that she ever had was SG$0.40 =) Nevertheless, I'm quite keen to take up a teaching scholarship to other countries, apart from China..keeping my options open. =) Australia offers a good course in Psychology major too. Prospects of an Education Psychologist/Pathologist are bright. Anyway..these are the information gathered from mingling with the education officers:
1) Less than 10 scholars are being sent to China for undergraduate studies every year under the MOE Teaching Scholarship. 2) There are 3 paths well-paved for scholars after graduation. All scholars spend a year in NIE to familiarise with the local teaching syllabus. They then proceed to classroom teaching for 2-3 years. After which, choices are diversified. They can choose to continue interacting with students via (A) The senior teacher --> Master teacher pathway. (B) Leadership track: Which is the most common path from HOD to Principal. (C) Curriculum and policy planning roles in MOE. 3) Graduates who have obtained a second-upper class honours or first class honours have the special privilege of a fully-sponsored Masters Education overseas. 4) Scholars can now choose to study other subjects apart from Chinese Language and Literature in China's prestigious Universities. (What's the point right..when the medium of teaching is in Chinese and the scholar has to translate everything back to English upon coming back to teach that subject) 5) 6 year bond for scholars going to English speaking countries, 5 year for those going to non-English speaking countries, 4 year for local scholarships.
I was actually quite inspired by the education officers who really went a great mile to explain many other courses available. e.g. Masters in Education in which I was previously confused. Some even went to the extent of sharing personal experiences with the scholars. The scholarship package seems to be an attractive deal. And I'm really grateful for the help MOE officers have provided in various clarifications. :) Before I ever seriously consider taking up a teaching scholarship, it's best to do relief teaching at my alma mater after "A"s.
