I've been plagued by boredom lately. Not that my rich imagination could not sustain my brain activity. But rather..days have been really warm and the body gets sluggish. It's as though the whole body is reluctant to function anymore. Haha. I came across this very inspiring short story. In a land far far away hidden in some isolated village, there lived a poor farmer and his son. They were constantly trapped in the vicious cycle of poverty. The only possession the farmer had was a donkey. The drought season arrived and the farmer and his son were left choiceless. No farmland...simply nothing to sustain their livelihood. The farmer decided that the only way was to travel to the city area and sell the donkey. And so father and son trudged across the desert. Initially, both of them walked alongside the donkey. A passer-by commented: "Old Man, ain't you silly! What's a donkey for if you don't ride on it?" The farmer thought that it sounded reasonable and so he asked his son to mount onto the donkey while he continued to walk on foot. After some time, another passer-by came past and chided the son: "Young Man, do you know what is filial piety? How could you bear to see your old father suffer and yet you are enjoying the ride?" The young boy was suddenly jolted back to his senses and felt utterly embarrassed. He jumped down from the donkey and helped his father up the donkey. Again, they continued the journey. This time, a passer-by came over and chided the old man:" To think that an old man like you who has gone through life's experiences not know how to take care of a young boy? How could you be so heartless as to leave him walking helplessly?" The farmer looked sympathetically at his son and realised that the boy was indeed having a hard time. This time, both father and son grew tired of the criticisms thrown at them. They decided to mount the donkey together and complete the journey. Another passer-by came past and screamed:" Oh God! How can we condone such cruelty to animals! You beastly humans who don't spare a thought for the poor donkey!" Both father and son ignored the passers-by and went ahead with their journey to the city. In the end, the donkey was sold to a rich merchant which fetched a good price. Moral of the story: In life, the things that we do will often be criticised by many different people. True enough, their opinions are worth consulting and to be reflected upon. However, if we dwell too much onto these criticisms and wish to please everyone, efficiency is seriously hampered. Anyway, the underlying meaning is that: Don't think so much when you've decided on something. The first decision could well be the best decision after all.
