Hmm..It seems a never-ending struggle when contemplating about future career paths. At times, I truly envy people who are goal-oriented, in both manners. Some people are just simply strong-willed and determined in achieving their goals, even from those set 10 years ago. They never seem to be swayed by others' opinions or external environment factors. The second type of people are those who are only good at one specific area. They have no other choice in life. It is extremely clear that this ought to be the ultimate path. Unfortunately for many, life is paved such that many options are laid before us. On a positive note, this allows for greater variety and the ability to choose. However, when choices become difficult to eliminate, one is stuck in a terrible dilemma.
Should one choose a course of study for interest sake or simply because of a special innate talent for it? I used to think that interest ought to be the way to go, despite being comparatively disadvantaged. But somehow interest does wan when the going gets really tough. On the contrary, confidence is built up when we trod onto the path which we are good at. Along the way, the spark of interest is ignited.
Once again, we are stranded at the crossroads. This time the stakes are highter. Sad to say, no one, absolutely no one can afford to lose.
I used to have aspirations of being a psychologist. To counsel people, to interact, to heal. Somehow, along the paths that I've trudged, together with the input from many others, my dreams swayed. Warned of the practicalities of society, warned of the tremendous emotional willpower needed to sustain the job. Basically, not many sensible adults advocate the job of a psychologist.
Perhaps I ought to blame myself for being too open-minded and receptive to others. Oh..perhaps too weak-willed. Nevertheless, I'm keeping my eyes wide open. Afterall, psychology may just become a part of my life.
